👍 Improve  your grade in Chemistry so that you can progress with confidence onto your next level of study.

Organic Chemistry is an area of Chemistry that stands on its own. There are so many key definitions and reactions to learning that it can feel overwhelming. The non-linear approach to the questions can cause panic. It is important to become competent in Organic Chemistry because it is a fundamental and large part of any Chemistry course. As chemistry exams go, a whole paper in the final exam may be devoted to Organic Chemistry. In this introductory course, I offer an explicit definitions and explanation of key definitions that Organic chemists use as a matter of course for the beginner in Advanced Chemistry.

What will you learn in this course?

Modules 1&2: Fundamentals, nomenclature and Isomerism:

To understand the different types of formulae by which organic molecules are represented.

To draw different types of formulae for organic molecules.

To name organic molecules using IUPAC rules and to recognize the structures of organic molecules from their name.

To describe and recognize different types of isomers and the circumstances in which they arise.

Module 3: The Alkanes:

How alkanes and cycloalkanes are structured and their general formulae.

The physical and chemical properties of alkanes.

The chemical reactions of alkanes and their reagents and conditions.

The mechanism for the free radical substitution reaction of alkanes with halogens.

The impact of using alkanes on the environment.

Module 4: The Alkenes:

How alkenes are structured and their general formulae.

E/Z isomerism and how and why it occurs in some alkenes.

The chemical reactions of alkenes and their reagents and conditions.

The mechanism for electrophilic addition to alkenes, inclusing Markofnikoff addition.

Addition Polymerisation and the environmetnatl issues around the use of addition polymers.

Module 5: The Alcohols:

✅The characterisation of alcohols

✅The reactions of alcohols with different reagents and conditions.

✅The stages of a laboratory preparation applied to oxidation and dehydration of alcohols.

The formation of alcohols from other functional groups.

✅Production and issues relating to ethanol.

Module 6: The Halogenoalkanes:

✅The properties of halogenoalkanes

The reactions of halogenoalkanes

✅Reactivities of different halogenoalkanes

Halogenoalkanes and the atmosphere
